Clingen Conversations: Filming Controversy in Ireland, Germany, and Brazil

This Clingen Conversations event explores the challenges that filmmakers face when handling difficult events and historical legacies. What role should films play in the treatment of these legacies in society? How do historians, filmmakers, and critics interact in the creation and development of both documentary and dramatized productions? Director Kátia Lund‘s critically acclaimed City of God (2002) depicted the rise of organized crime in a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro in the 1960s and 70s, earning four Academy Award nominations. Prof. Thomas Weber, Professor of History and International Affairs at the University of Aberdeen, is the author of Hitler’s First War (Oxford, 2010), currently being adapted as a TV mini-series. Prof. Bríona Nic Dhiarmada, Thomas J. & Kathleen O’Donnell Chair of Irish Studies, is the writer, producer, and creative force behind the award-winning, multi-part documentary 1916 The Irish Rebellion (2016).
