Understanding the Body with W.B. Yeats & James Joyce

In the last book club series, Professor Barry McCrea guided us through various representations of what it’s like to experience life in lockdown during a pandemic and how it alters our relationship with society.
This new series, led by Professor Declan Kiberd, will draw our focus closer to the human body, inviting readers to consider how the body is represented in the work of Irish authors W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Nuala Ni Dhomhnaill and Eavan Boland.
Introducing readers to Yeats and Joyce, two towering figures of Irish literature, the following themes will be discussed: the relationship between mind and body, the body in pain, the body in Irish history, and the body set free. Guest speakers will join Professor Kiberd during some of these sessions.
Live meetings will be on Wednesdays, 1:00 PM (EDT) on August 5, 12, 19, and 26.
