During the first session of “Inspiring Conversations” we will focus on the topic “Embracing the Mind, Body and Spirit through Health Care - Navigating a Mission-Driven System Through Dual Pandemics” through a conversation with Dr. Penny Wheeler, the president and chief executive officer of Allina Health, a Minneapolis-based health care system with 12 hospitals and over 90 clinics which employs about 29,000 people. The conversation will explore how Allina works to ensure it can meet its evolving mission today and into the future. This promises to be a powerful discussion given the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic for health care in general and Allina specifically, coupled with the need to ensure that it maintains a focus on the need for racial justice as was brought to global light by the killing of George Floyd in its own backyard.

Tom Schreier (’84) oversees the Inspired Leadership Initiative as its founding director where since 2016 he has had the privilege of working with the leadership, faculty and staff of Our Lady’s University to develop a distinctive program for accomplished leaders who have completed their traditional careers and are looking to pivot to become an even greater force for good.
Currently, Tom serves as chairman of the Allina Health Board, a Director of Piper, Sandler Companies, and also serves as a trustee of the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He is a member of the Applied Investment Management Advisory Board for the University of Notre Dame and a founding investor in Granite Global Ventures. While in the investment industry, Tom was a long-standing member of the Board of Governors of the Investment Company Institute (ICI) and served on its Chairman’s Council. Additionally, Tom is the former chairman of the Saint Thomas Academy Board of Trustees and continues to serve on its Finance and Investment Committees.

Penny Wheeler, MD, is the president and chief executive officer of Allina Health. Prior to her appointment as CEO, she served as the chief clinical officer of Allina Health, responsible for leading the organization’s quality and value agenda through alignment of the clinical and operational leadership to optimally benefit those served by Allina Health. A board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Wheeler served patients at Women’s Health Consultants in Minneapolis, was the president of Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s medical staff, chaired the Allina Health Quality Committee and served on the Allina Health Board of Directors.
