Why Does Biodiversity Matter to Us All?

The London Global Gateway is running a Sustainable Future Series inspired by Pope Francis’ vision set out in ‘Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home,’ which calls all people to respond to the “cry of the earth” and the “cry of the poor.”

The first in this series, entitled Why Does Biodiversity Matter to Us All? will look at how the issue of climate change has sunk into the public and religious consciousness, even if controversial in some quarters, but many don’t really understand why we need to care about biodiversity from a religious and moral perspective.

Professor Celia Deane-Drummond, Director of the Laudato Si’ Research Institute and Senior Research Fellow in theology at Campion Hall, University of Oxford, will discuss this in the first lecture of the series, entitled Why Does Biodiversity Matter to Us All? Join us on Monday, November 29, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. (EST) to 1:00 p.m. (EST) ET.

Speaker:
Celia Deane-Drummond is currently Director of the Laudato Si’ Research Institute and Senior Research Fellow in theology at Campion Hall, University of Oxford. She is also honorary visiting Professor in Theology and Science at the University of Durham, UK. Before this, she was a Professor in Theology at the University of Notre Dame from 2011-2019.

Her work at the interface of theology, ethics and the biological and human sciences stems from her prior academic experience in plant physiology as well as theology. She is a trustee of the International Society for Science and Religion (ISSR). She was chair of the European Forum for the Study of Religion and Environment from 2011-2018. She is editor of the journal Philosophy, Theology and the Sciences. She is widely recognised internationally as a public speaker and has published hundreds of articles in academic and other journals.
