Peace, Love, and the Oscars

Ted Barron and Ricky Herbst discuss what’s happening in film, both at the Browning Cinema and in the industry. The former involves the ScreenPeace Film Festival, a collaboration with Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies, that shows global films that address conflict and resolution across the globe. The 2017 slate includes Fire at Sea, Ixcanul, Hissein Habré: A Chadian Tragedy, Do Not Resist, and Time to Choose. Other February offerings include the James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro and an evening of Oscar-nominated shorts. Ted and Ricky then turn to Hollywood’s annual navel-gazing and the role awards play in the film industry. Comparing top 10 lists from various critics to Academy Award nominees, the two discuss the role of ‘best of’ in the arts and the shifting viewing experience the Oscars have had through time.
