Globally, conflict and violence are on the rise according to the United Nations, which has warned that peace is more under threat around the world than it has been since World War II. Two billion peopleāa quarter of the entire global populationālive in conflict-affected areas. ThinkND is pleased to share the events for the 2022ā23 Notre Dame Forum with our learning community. Each year since its establishment in 2005 by Notre Dameās president, Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the Notre Dame Forum has invited campus-wide dialogue about issues of importance to the University, the nation and the larger world.
As we contemplated the theme of “War & Peace” this past academic year, we were guided by Pope Francisā words fromAgainst War: Building a Culture of Peace:
And together we must commit ourselves to building a world that is more peaceful because it is more just, where peace triumphs, not the folly of war; justice, not the injustice of war; mutual forgiveness, not the hatred that divides and makes us see an enemy in the other, in those who are different from us.
Looking forward to 2023-24, we will rely upon our expertise in the study of democracy, our commitment to civil discourse, and our convening power, as we dedicate the conversation to exploring āThe Future of Democracy.ā Our goal is to invite reflection and dialogue among students and scholars across different disciplines on the rising threats to global democracy and to consider how democracy can be reinvigorated in our nation and across the world to meet the challenges of our times.
