Indigeneity in Europe: Possibilities, Challenges, and Alliances
Indigeneity has become an increasingly important concept on the global stage in recent years, creating possibilities for international cooperation and collaboration between diverse peoples. Europe has been no exception: despite Europe’s colonial history, many communities in the continent point to parallel histories of colonialism and other forms of peripheralization that align them, at least to some extent, with the global Indigenous Peoples’ movement. Contemporary movements in diverse areas (language rights, education, sustainability, and human rights) in the continent are increasingly turning to indigeneity, and alliances with Indigenous peoples, as a way of capturing their claims, identities, solidarities, and aspirations. This panel brings together scholars to discuss the increasing salience of indigeneity in European life, asking questions like: how do European indgeneities fit within the broader global Indigenous Peoples’ movement? What possibilities for action does indigeneity offer to historically marginalized European communities, and what global alliances does it open up or close down? Is it an appropriate way for those communities to pursue their goals, or are other routes more effective? What are the key challenges in pursuing indigeneity—as identity, as political strategy, as legal status—in the European context? Each panelist will discuss their own work, followed by audience questions and discussion. Join us on zoom or livestream on Friday, November 22, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. ET.
