Center for Citizenship & Constitutional Government
Dear Friends,
Notre Dame’s Center for Citizenship & Constitutional Government seeks to cultivate thoughtful and educated citizens by supporting scholarship and education concerning the ideas and institutions of constitutional government. We explore the fundamental principles and practices of a free society and thereby equip Notre Dame students to become leading citizens who are prepared to secure our God-given natural rights, exercise the responsibilities of self-government, and pursue the common good.
The Center aspires to further Notre Dame’s Catholic character and mission by providing a forum where, through free inquiry and reasoned discussion, the Catholic intellectual tradition is brought to bear on enduring and contemporary questions concerning a just constitutional order. Among its activities, the Center supports Notre Dame’s undergraduate minor and Ph.D. subfield in Constitutional Studies, provides mentoring for ND undergraduates through our competitive student fellows program, funds research by Notre Dame faculty and visiting fellows, partners with Notre Dame’s professional schools and university press, and offers a robust program of lectures, debates, and conferences for the Notre Dame community and the general public.
Recent Center-sponsored events include our 2021 Tocqueville lecture delivered by Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, Professor Muñoz’s fireside chat with Senator Tim Scott, and a major public address by Congresswoman Liz Cheney. The Center is also known for its defense of free speech and academic freedom as well as bringing spirited political debates that bring diverse views and opinions to campus on the most controversial topics, including abortion, same-sex marriage, the morality of capitalism, and the Trump presidency.
In the fall of 2023, the CCCG plans to bring to campus distinguished Harvard professor Danielle Allen and former Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, among others. A curated selection of our extensive library of recorded lectures, debates, and conversations is available as a mini-library on ThinkND. We invite you to explore and learn!
Go Irish!
