Have you ever wanted to create your own unique sounds but didn’t know how to start? Using basic geometry, it’s easy to synthesize new and exciting sounds through software you can run on a laptop! In this talk, Indiana University South Bend professor Ryan Olivier will demonstrate a few synthesis techniques and explain how thinking in geometries has informed his compositional process.

Meet the Faculty: Ryan Oliver

Ryan Oliver is an Associate Professor of Music at Indiana University South Bend, where he directs the electronic music ensemble, the Audio-Visual Collective, and teaches courses in electronic music composition, music technology, and music theory and composition. Previously, Ryan taught at Temple University and St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in music composition from Loyola University New Orleans, as well as graduate degrees from Temple University.

He is a composer and multimedia artist. Over the years, he has been fortunate to work with talented performers such as the Relâche Ensemble, the Euclid Quartet, Ensemble Concept/21, and the Cygnus Ensemble, who have performed his works across the United States. In addition to his concert works his various interests have led him to work with a wide array of media, including electronics, video, and dance. These works have been featured at the Society of Composers, Inc. (SCI) National Conferences, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival (NYCEMF), the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) National Conference, the International Workshop on Computer Music and Audio Technology (WOCMAT) in Taiwan, the Conference on Computation Communication Aesthetics & X in Austria, the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC) in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and the Punto y Raya Festival in Reykjavik, Iceland.
