Meet the Speaker: Dr. Richard Swinburne

Dr. Richard Granville Swinburne is an English philosopher and an Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oxford. He began his academic life at the University of Oxford, with undergraduate (1954-1957) and graduate (1957-1959) degrees in philosophy and then a diploma in theology (1959-1960). Over the past fifty years, he has been a prominent advocate of philosophical arguments for the existence of God, particularly within the realms of the philosophy of religion and philosophy of science. Swinburne is well-known for his influential trilogy of books: The Coherence of TheismThe Existence of God, and Faith and Reason, which have spurred extensive debate and analysis in philosophical circles. Additionally, his work has significantly contributed to the philosophy of mind, particularly through his revival of substance dualism, the view that mind and body are distinct entities. Swinburne’s rigorous and clear approach to complex philosophical issues has made him a central figure in contemporary philosophical discourse.
