Slava Vakarchuk is Ukraine’s biggest rock star and one of Europe’s most fascinating artists and activists. As frontman of the legendary band Okean Elzy, he has brought the sounds of Ukrainian language and culture to stadiums and concert halls around the world. As a civic activist, he has fought for democracy, transparency, and the rule of law in Ukraine during times of struggle and revolution. And as a soldier in Ukraine’s Armed Forces, he has worked tirelessly to defend and inspire his people since the onset of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
In 2005 he was named a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme and became a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Freedom of Expression and Information. In September 2008, he renounced his seat in the Verkhovna Rada party due to a corrupt political climate. In parliamentary elections in 2007, he appeared as an independent candidate on the Our Ukraine–People’s Self-Defense Bloc’s list. The Ukrainian magazine Korrespondent ranks him as one of the 100 most influential people of Ukraine. Slava holds a degree in theoretical physics and has released eight studio albums with his band.
