Precision health promises targeted care tailored to the individual. It draws on rapid advances in biomedical technologies that have the power, speed, and reliability to identify genetic and proteomic information, biomarkers, and disease subtypes at the individual level. By understanding these differences, clinicians are able to deliver the right treatment to the right patient at the right time. Notre Dame draws on its established strengths in molecular diagnostics, data sciences, and drug discovery to drive precision health forward, bringing discoveries from the laboratory into the field, the clinic, and the market, where they can improve lives.
At the heart of Notre Dame’s efforts to address precision health and well-being is theBerthiaumeInstitute for Precision Health (BIPH), whose mission is to prevent and treat disease, promote wellness, and reduce health disparities. Members of the Institute conduct research into the molecular, cellular, and environmental factors underlying each person’s health, particularly the underserved, and work to ensure new discoveries, data, and technologies benefit all populations.
BIPH’s research specifically targets three grand challenges: (1) developing tools and measurement schemes to illuminate the “dark molecules of life,”— the many components of cells that can be detected but not yet identified—through a focus on next-generation instrumentation; (2) delivering health technologies to peoplewhere they arethrough field-deployable, point-of-care devices, many of which take advantage of the latest advances in micro- and nanoscale tools; and (3) understanding the microbiome—the diverse microbial communities that share the human biosphere—and its relation to human health.
