When John Henry Newman was invited to Dublin by the Irish bishops to set up the Catholic University of Ireland, he sought a large space to serve as a chapel and public lecture hall. Newman purchased 87 Saint Stephen’s Green (the red Georgian to the right of the Church entrance). With the assistance of architect John Hungerford Pollen (another former Anglican priest), they designed a church to fill the house’s garden.

Walk down the centre aisle of the church, stopping halfway to turn towards to bust of Saint John Henry Newman
