In a heartfelt conversation marking the first days of his presidency, Fr. Robert Dowd, C.S.C., shared his vision for Notre Dame’s future alongside outgoing President Fr. John Jenkins. With warmth, humility, and clarity, Dowd described the spiritual and intellectual convictions that will guide his leadership—centered on community, bridge-building, student formation, and faith-driven scholarship.

Dowd’s continued residence in Kavanaugh Hall among students reflects his deep commitment to accompaniment and pastoral presence. For him, university leadership is not about separation from campus life but immersion in it. His background—from growing up in Indiana, to studying politics and religion, to his work in East Africa—has shaped a global and ethical sensibility grounded in Catholic mission.

He reflected on his academic passion for African politics and the Ford Program’s efforts to conduct research in solidarity with poor communities, not on them. He emphasized that Notre Dame’s distinctiveness lies in forming students of faith, wisdom, and courage—not just technical expertise. A core theme emerged: Notre Dame is called to be a bridge-builder in a divided world, rooted in love and reason, not partisanship.

From intercollegiate athletics to protests on campus, Dowd aims to lead with integrity and reflection, inviting dialogue, not division. His vision is not a rupture from the past but a continuation of mission. The September inauguration, with academic programming, a celebration of the Eucharist, and a Jon Batiste concert, will symbolize celebration and rededication.

In a final moment of grace, Dowd closed the conversation with a blessing and prayer, reminding listeners that this presidency is not just about leadership—it’s about vocation.
