Wireless Institute

Dear Friends,

In an era marked by the rapid expansion of wireless technologies and the increasing interconnectivity of people and things, the demand for wider bandwidths and higher frequencies has placed immense pressure on radio spectrum availability. Recognizing this challenge, the Wireless Institute (WI) in the College of Engineering at the University of Notre Dame has emerged as a pioneering research center dedicated to revolutionizing wireless technologies and shaping spectrum policy.

Established in January 2010, the Wireless Institute leverages Notre Dame’s rich expertise to address these interdisciplinary challenges. Committed to making a global impact, WI draws upon the expertise of esteemed faculty members from electrical engineering, computer science, engineering, sociology, law, and finance departments. As trailblazers in the field, WI proudly spearheaded the creation of the first NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) program at Notre Dame and currently leads SpectrumX, the prestigious NSF Spectrum Innovation Initiative (SII) Center.

The Wireless Institute includes six cutting-edge laboratories, each dedicated to groundbreaking research in wireless technologies. These labs include:
Within these facilities, our research focuses on diverse areas, from collecting and analyzing measurements to advancing system models, sensing algorithms, and signaling schemes for efficiently utilizing the radio spectrum. And in the true spirit of Notre Dame, we focus on educational experiences to prepare students to be experts and leaders in the field.

At the Wireless Institute, we are grateful for the opportunity to pursue groundbreaking research and teaching at such a great University, with our many academic, industry, and government collaborators. To share our knowledge and empower the community, we invite you to explore our ThinkND mini-library, a comprehensive resource of free continuing education materials. We encourage you to share these invaluable resources with your friends and family, further spreading the transformative power of wireless technologies.

With warm regards,

Dr. Bert Hochwald
