What is Compassion Science in Medicine?

The Hillebrand Center at Notre Dame works to restore the spirit of compassion in healthcare by advancing the application of the science of compassion at every level of medical training and practice to transform clinician well-being and patient care.

The science of compassion represents a paradigm shift in the practice of medicine and in medical training. It is based on the biology of compassion, the neuroscience of compassion, the psychology of compassion as well as other sciences. This new emphasis on training a clinician’s mindset helps care providers to more clearly understand their patients who are suffering.
