The University of Notre Dame’s John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology, and Values brings the sciences and humanities together to explore the nature and impact of science, technology, and medicine. Through our programs, we inspire reflection on the connections between and across disciplines. Our academic community is dedicated to examining science, technology, and medicine through the lens of the liberal arts to preserve human dignity and support the common good.
The Reilly Center was established in 1985. It is named for the father of an alumnus whose gift launched and supports the Reilly Dual Degree Program in Arts and Letters and Engineering. In 1986 the center launched an undergraduate minor in Science, Technology, and Values with the aid of a three-year start-up grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Since then, the Center has founded a graduate program in the History and Philosophy of Science, and a graduate certificate in environment and society (GLOBES), which was developed in 2005 with the support of a National Science Foundation grant. The Center launched a new program in Health, Humanities, and Society, in 2021 with the generous support of Joan Storozynski Coogan.
