Center for Literacy Education

Dear Friends,

Simply put, when students read more, their lives improve. Academic literacy rates are positively correlated to life expectancy, educational outcomes, and earning potential, while low literacy rates are negatively correlated to incarceration, dropping out, and unemployment. To open a book is to unlock a whole host of academic and professional opportunities that might not otherwise be available.

The Center for Literacy Education fosters collaboration between the Institute’s literacy education faculty and the College of Arts and Letters with the goal of transforming literacy scholarship and practice in today’s K-12 multicultural schools.

Animated by the vision of the University of Notre Dame’s Institute for Educational Initiatives, the Center for Literacy Education conducts research, community outreach programs, and teacher formation programs to significantly improve literacy achievement and life outcomes for all students, especially those from vulnerable populations in public and Catholic schools.

The Center for Literacy Education is pleased to share opportunities to learn through our work with the ThinkND learning community, and welcome you as a partner to bridge the gap between the powerful practices of literacy in your neighborhoods and communities and the literacy practices happening in schools. Join us!

Best wishes from campus,
