The Mutual “Ennobling” of Science and Faith: From Rev. John A. Zahm, C.S.C., to Laudato Si’

Tuesday, October 12, 2021 7:30 pm EST

Join Sister Damien Marie Savino, F.S.E. as she uses the work and thought of priest-scientist Rev. John A. Zahm, C.S.C., (1851-1921) as a springboard to explore the relationship between faith and science, especially as it informs Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’.

Sister Damien Marie Savino is a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharist and has served as the Dean of Science and Sustainability at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan since 2016. In this position she oversees the Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Environmental Studies departments and the college’s Center for Sustainability. Sister Damien Marie received her BS degree in Biogeography from McGill University and her MS degree in Soil and Plant Science from University of Connecticut. She earned both her MA degree in Theology and her Ph.D. degree in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from The Catholic University of America.

Her scientific research focused on environmental remediation of soil and groundwater contamination, the environmental impacts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, and the application of resilience theory to ecosystem health. For the past ten years, she has become increasingly involved in interdisciplinary projects and has lectured and written widely on Laudato Si’ and integral ecology, as well as on science and faith, ecology and theology, and ecological restoration and health. Join us on Tuesday, 10/12/2021, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET.
