Sex, Sexual Orientation, and Gender Identity: An Inclusive Look at Title VII

Professor Steve Sanders of the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, attorney Eduardo Juarez of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and Kimberly Hively, the named plaintiff in Hively v. Ivy Tech Community College, discussed Title VII of the Civil Rights Act on October 15, 2019, in the McCartan Courtroom at Notre Dame Law School.

The panelists discussed whether Title VII, which prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sex, also prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. The panel discussed legal precedents in this area and provided an overview of R.G. & G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC & Aimee Stephens, a case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
