Fr. Ted Said… Civil & Human Rights: Mary Meg McCarthy ’80

Mary Meg McCarthy ‘80, Executive Director of the National Immigrant Justice Center, a Heartland Alliance program, speaks as part of the Alumni Association’s Fr. Ted Said Speaker Series during Reunion 2019. The series offers thought-provoking talks by ND faculty and alumni that explore the world’s most pressing problems and honor the legacy of Fr. Hesburgh.

McCarthy left a private bar career in 1998 to direct what is now the National Immigrant Justice Center, a Heartland Alliance program. Understanding the need to teach the legal community about often hidden injustices within the immigration system, she brought the compelling life stories of immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers to the private bar, creating and cultivating a network of more than 1,000 pro bono attorneys who provide legal consultations, representation, and litigation services to thousands of clients of all races and nationalities.
