Abeba Birhane is a PhD candidate in cognitive science at the Complex Software Lab in the School of Computer Science at University College Dublin, Ireland. Her interdisciplinary research examines the indeterminable and ambiguous nature of people (as complex adaptive systems) and the problems that arise with machine prediction of such systems.

Noopur Raval
Postdoctoral Researcher, AI Now Institute

Noopur Raval is a postdoctoral researcher at the AI Now Institute. She is an interdisciplinary researcher at the intersection of Information Science and Communication and Media Studies. Her doctoral research studied the transformations that gig economy platforms bring about in how we work, live, and relate to each other ethically. Raval’s research on the gig economy has looked at the effect of platforms on labor conditions, collectivization, and the redistribution of social power through platform participation. At AI Now she leads “A New AI Lexicon” project that pushes the boundaries of critical AI thinking by offering globally situated perspectives.
