How Cities Speak To Us

How Cities Speak To Us

Professor Emily Talen joins the School of Architecture to share her work at The Urbanism Lab and its focal point at the University of Chicago for the study of the built environment and its meaning and impact. Professor Talen’s research is devoted to urban design and urbanism, especially the relationship between the built environment and social equity. Her work is reflective of social, cultural and political movements aimed at improving the quality of the built environment. Of particular interest is the notion of sustainable urbanism and the ability of cities to be places of vibrancy, social diversity, and neighborhood identity. Professor Talen’s research, culminating in her book titled Neighborhood (Oxford Press, 2019), is written in support of those who believe that neighborhoods should be genuinely relevant in our lives—not as casual descriptors of geographic location, but as places that provide an essential context for daily life.
